Preparing Your Top & Backing

For Best Results:

  • Backing and Batting needs to be 6-8 inches (total) larger than the top.
  • Press your quilt top/backing well – flat seams are good! If pressing seams open, stitching in the ditch will not be a good choice. Minor wrinkles from folding during transporting are not a problem.
  • Press backing seams well.
  • Trim hanging threads from the back, specifically if you have large contrasts in color. If the dark fabrics strings may show through the light fabric, then it needs to be well trimmed
  • If there is a top of the quilt/backing, identify it in some way (a safety pin with note works).
  • Stay stitch 1/4 in around the edge of the quilt top if there are many seams on the edge.  Especially if you have trimmed the sides after stitching! This will prevent the seams from popping open along the edge.
  • Add any borders by measuring in three different places ( top, bottom, middle) to determine the average for border length. Cut and sew on easing fullness of quilt as needed. Do the same for the other sides. This will help control waves in borders.
